What to do after a fire

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Even small fires contained to one room can spread soot and harmful fumes throughout your home. Putting out the fire may create a water damage or a mess of fire extinguisher foam.

Your first instinct may be to start cleaning whatever you can, but you may actually make the damage worse. You should consult a fire restoration specialist certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to learn what you can do and how best to save your property.

Call SERVPRO®

Our restoration professionals are committed to restoring your property. We want to help you reoccupy your home as fast as possible.

Our experienced crews will help you navigate the restoration process. Their know-how and commercial cleaning products will prevent secondary damage to your belongings.

Protect Plumbing

You can safely wipe soot off chrome fixtures. Consider applying a light coating of lubricant to protect them from soot disturbed during cleaning.

If the weather is cold and the heating system is disabled, you should pour RV antifreeze into sinks, toilets, tubs, and holding tanks to prevent pipes freezing.

Check Your Appliances

If you do not have power, empty the freezer and refrigerator of food and leave the doors open. Otherwise, you will get bad odors in them.

As with plumbing fixtures, you can wipe the soot off chrome appliances and apply a lubricant, but you should not attempt to use an electrical appliance until you are certain it was not damaged in the fire.

Protect Heating System

Cover your HVAC intakes with two layers of cheesecloth to prevent soot and other particulates from getting into the system. You may also change the air filter, but you should not try to turn the system back on until an HVAC professional has inspected it.

Remember Your House Plants

Plants are living organisms that need to breathe. Wipe away soot from both sides of all leaves to help them survive. Consider moving them to another location if the temperature during restoration is too hot or cold for them.

Nicotine Odour Cleanup

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Nicotine odours are some of the most difficult to counteract. A very typical scenario is that a seller wishes to maximize the value of their property, but the occupants had been heavy smokers for years. Smoke odour molecules can get everywhere, including behind kitchen counters, and embedded into painted surfaces.
Ordinary latex interior paint is porous and will trap nicotine odour molecules, so even after a deodorization, the embedded nicotine molecules may continue to emanate odours. Options include cleaning the affected surface, applying an odour blocking sealant to the surface, or removing and replacing the surface.

When opting to clean a painted surface, it is advisable to raise the temperature in the room to 29C (85F) for 24-48 hours prior to the work. This elevated temperature will open the pores in the painted surface, allowing the trapped nicotine odour molecules to be removed.

The application of an odour blocking sealant is not as labour intensive as cleaning, however it takes longer. After the sealant dries, the surfaces will need to be re-painted.

Removal and replacement is reserved for those situations when there is no viable alternative. For example, most textured ceilings (popcorn) are unpainted plaster and can trap a lot of nicotine odour molecules. Application of a sealant may lead to deterioration of the plaster. Removal of the texture and conversion to a smooth ceiling may be the preferred option.

What to do in a winter storm

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

In North America, we have the luxury of having all four seasons to contend with; unfortunately winter is part of those seasons. For most North American's the winter season brings with it a lot of hurt backs and disastrous driving conditions. Not to mention the snow storms. From the inability to see inches ahead of you, to being trapped in your home due to the sheer volume of snowfall, this brings us to the thing we North Americans detest the most, the infamous snow storm. During these times a lot of us are left not knowing what to do, or even knowing what not to do. Luckily, SERVPRO offers a variety of information that can help prepare you and your family for the worst. We also offer emergency response services, based on different situations. For example-dealing with frozen pipes, extreme cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and potentially burst. In these cases, water damage can be extensive, to say the least. Always pay attention to your local weather network or radio broadcast to stay up to date with the necessary information. A severe drop in temperature can cause potential driving hazards and pedestrian walking hazards. Always be sure to check weather broadcasting before your commute, because being prepared could even save your life.

Heavy summer rain facts and safety tips

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know on Aug.19, 2005, up to 175 mm of rain fell over Toronto in less than 2 hours. Total costs from damage associated with the storm exceeded $500M - the second largest loss event in Canadian history!?!

There are two different types of summer heavy rains that Canada experiences:

  1. Large scale weather systems with long-term rainfall -
These large weather systems can last several days. Environment Canada issues Rainfall Warnings for this type of event.

  2. Short-lived thunderstorms with significant rainfall -
Within a short period of time, sometimes only minutes, localized downpours from thunderstorms can produce flash flooding. Environment Canada issues Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for these types of rainfall events.

Here are some useful heavy rain safety tips:

  • Routinely monitor the Environment Canada weather forecasts for watches and warnings of potential heavy rains or severe thunderstorms with local heavy downpours.

  • Know potential risks for flooding in your area and plan an escape route to higher ground but keep in mind the threat from lightning which is greater on high ground.

  • During heavy rains, avoid roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, low lying areas and water collection areas. They can unexpectedly flood or overflow.  DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE ACROSS A FLOODED ROAD. You can’t tell the condition of the road under the water.

  • Stay away from power lines or electrical wires during floods.

  • Monitor the provincial government flood forecasts and warnings.

The above is sourced from the Government of Canada Environmental Website.

In case of a Storm...

6/16/2021 (Permalink)

picture of a sign that says "storm warning" Storm Warning

It's not everyday your Zoom call gets interrupted with, "Hey, everyone. I have to log off and head down to my basement. There's a tornado not too far from here." Although this may not be the case in Canada, there has never been harm for preparing for any type of disaster.

Keep reading for some of SERVPRO's top tips for homeowners that want to be prepared!

Top 5 Storm Preparation Tips

#1 – Be ready for a power outage

 Warning: You might lose power.

Severe weather is the leading cause to power outages, so hope for the best but plan for the worst. Preparation for an approaching storm should include:

  • Buying a standby generator if your area has several severe storms throughout the season.
  • Making sure you have batteries on hand for flashlights.

#2 – Sign up for local alerts

Sign up to receive emergency alerts.

Most local communities have an alert system, which will send messages via email or text to your phone. Generally, these automated systems will send all kinds of information, from steps your town is taking to keep you safe to the status of the local roads to tips on how to prepare for a storm.

 #3 – Make a home emergency plan

Make sure you have two exits for every room.

Similar to a fire evacuation plan, you also need a home emergency plan for your family. Also, have a place to meet inside the neighbourhood, like a neighbours house or a certain tree, in case your family needs to evacuate your home.

#4 – Don't forget outdoor preparation

With a severe storm headed your way, there's a few steps you should take to protect yourself and your neighbours. Move your car to a safe location, one that usually doesn't flood. Secure your patio furniture. Protect your home by covering windows and doors.

#5 – Review your home insurance

 Look over your homeowners insurance.

If you want to be ready before a disaster strikes SERVPRO of Peterborough is here to help you. Call us today to see how we can help you feel safe and secure in your home or business today!

Does Your Peterborough Home Have A Mold Problem?

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – 705-761-7216

Peterborough Residents: Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Peterborough for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Conditions In Kawartha Lakes Might Be Right For Mold

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Peterborough to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 705-761-7216

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Peterborough for mold remediation services.

Peterborough Smoke and Soot Cleanup

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Peterborough will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

SERVPRO of Peterborough is in an article for the Bethany Park community rebuild on mykawartha.com

There’s nothing quite like the excitement and anticipation of getting a brand new playground.

Now, Bethany kids and their friends won’t have to wait any longer. Bethany Community Park’s new playground is installed and open for playing.

Designed by Open Space Solutions, the new equipment features not only all playground must haves, such as slides and monkey bars, but modern twists too, such as a stand-up tettertotter and accessibility swing.

The park's $100,000 makeover was afforded through community fundraising headed by the Bethany Athletic Society. The society also secured an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant which covered the majority of the cost.

“We are so fortunate to live in such an amazing town with such great community spirit. This was a community build,” she said, sending thanks to Mike Clark Excavating, retired backhoe operator Ralph Hoy, Paul Wilson, Glenn Windrem Trucking, SERVPRO Peterborough, Stella's Getaway, Coach's Diner and every community member who responded to an open-call for help to install the park.

Owner of SERVPRO of Peterborough, Tim Gallant, grew up in Bethany Ontario. He has since moved back with his wife, Kelly and two children. Even when he didn't live in Bethany he still participated in the annual fundraising baseball tournaments and other community events.

This past Friday Tim brought his whole SERVPRO crew to the Bethany Park to assist with the community build of the brand new and much anticipated playground. The park has been fundraising for four years for this new playground.

It was a beautiful summer day full of community spirit and SERVPRO of Peterborough is more than honored to be a part of it. Now Tim and his wife can watch their own children enjoy the playground that Tim once enjoyed!
